“Traditional schooling wasn’t working out”

Even before COVID-19, many students were choosing to trade in brick and mortar school models for online learning environments. Some chose remote learning, while others opted for more interactive online educational approaches to homeschooling.

“Traditional schooling wasn’t working out,” says Nicholas, a Valenture student, when asked why he joined our school.

Why?

Too often we hear and see that traditional schooling hasn’t evolved enough over the last few decades and that its systems don't allow for much flexibility or real-world application. Systems are not set-up to empower learners to become changemakers who can meaningfully participate in the rapidly changing world outside of the classroom.

Valenture’s Dean of Business, Gareth Pinches mimics this sentiment, saying that education hasn’t changed in the last 15 years that he’s been teaching. He agrees with the quote by Jo Ho Lee, the Commissioner with the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity, that reads:

”We have to look back almost two centuries to find the root causes of today’s global learning crisis. The current classroom and schooling model, where teachers deliver uniform and standardised content through lectures for students with little space to adjust to students potential and needs, appears not much different from the mass production systems of the first Industrial Revolution era in the late 18th century.'"

Valenture allows students to have real-world impact as students are taught that learning is about way more than just knowing the facts.

“I am thrilled to be part of a team that values the unique affordances of digital technologies and their application to bring about a truly transformative pedagogical approach for the next generation of disruptors and changemakers,” says Amy Johnson, Chief Academic Officer at Valenture.

All industries have been forced to undergo drastic changes because of COVID-19. And this was almost the push the educational model needed to be catapulted into a space of change, where it, arguably, evolved into a superior model formerly known (and accepted) by students and parents. It disrupted mainstream, linear-thinking around educational investment and made it clear to more students and parents that we need to invest in a future that not only produces smart kids, but smart kids that know how to solve problems.

Even before lockdown, our students experienced an approach to learning which helps them excel academically and socially, but that also equips them with the life skills and courage to drive social change for a sustainable future.

Towards a future of impactful learning.
